PReCePT stands for Prevention of Cerebral Palsy in Preterm Labour. It focuses on improving access to magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) for people at risk of giving birth early.

Giving magnesium sulphate to women at risk of delivering a preterm baby reduces the chance their baby will develop cerebral palsy by 32%.

The NICE quality standard on preterm labour and birth recommends that all women who may deliver at less than 30 weeks’ gestational age are offered magnesium sulphate where possible.

The aim is for every maternity unit in England to adopt NICE NG25 guidance and achieve 85% uptake of MgSO4 for eligible mothers in preterm labour.
