Childcare costs when you have twins or more

Childcare in the UK can be expensive for any family. When you have twins, triplets or more, the cost can feel overwhelming, especially if you’d like to return to work.

You might have already found a nursery, preschool, childminder or nanny you love. The next question is how to afford more than one childcare place at the same time. Understanding what help you’re entitled to can make a real difference to your choices and your confidence about going back to work.

Finding the right childcare for your family

When you start planning childcare for your twins, triplets or more, it helps to look at what’s available locally. Options might include nurseries, preschools, registered childminders or nannies.

Places can fill quickly, particularly if you need two or three spaces on the same days. In some areas, especially London and other big cities, parents often join nursery waiting lists during pregnancy. In smaller towns or rural communities, you may have a bit more time, but it’s still wise to ask early.

Try talking to other parents while you’re pregnant or soon after birth. They can tell you how long waiting lists are and which settings feel supportive of families with twins, triplets or more. Once you have a shortlist, visit in person, ask how they support siblings and check how they use funded hours and tax-free childcare.

Funding and tax-free childcare for parents of multiples

There are two main types of help with childcare costs: tax-free childcare and funded childcare hours. You may be able to use both at the same time if you meet the criteria.

If you’re eligible, tax-free childcare is paid through the Government scheme. You pay money into an online account and the Government adds 20% on top, up to £500 for each child every three months. This rises to £1,000 if your child has a disability. You can use it to pay for nurseries, preschools, registered childminders, nannies, holiday clubs and out of school clubs until your child is 11 years old. Most families qualify, so it’s worth checking the Government childcare website.

You can often use tax-free childcare alongside funded hours. The Government calls these schemes ‘free early education’, although many families still need to pay for meals, snacks and top-up fees. Funded hours are calculated per child, so each twin or triplet will have their own allocation. You can check what your are entitled to on the government childcare support checker.

Across the UK, the offers differ:

  • In England, working parents of children aged nine months to four years may be eligible for up to 30 funded hours, depending on income
  • In England, all three and four-year-olds are entitled to 15 hours of universal funded childcare, with some two-year-olds also eligible for 15 hours
  • In Scotland, three and four-year-olds, and some two-year-olds on low-income benefits, can receive up to 1,140 funded hours per year
  • In Wales, eligible working parents of three and four-year-olds may receive up to 30 funded hours per week, and some families in Flying Start areas can get 12.5 funded hours for two-year-olds

You can also visit the Working Families for detailed information about eligibility in England, Scotland and Wales. It’s a good idea to check the latest rules for your country, as offers may change over time.

Planning your next steps with confidence

When you’re caring for more than one baby, the thought of juggling work and childcare can feel daunting. Starting early gives you more choices. You can:

  • Explore different settings and ask how they support twins, triplets or more
  • Check your tax-free childcare eligibility on the Government tax-free childcare scheme website
  • Use Working Families to understand how funded hours work where you live

Once you know what you’re entitled to, you can calculate the real cost of childcare for each child and decide what pattern of work feels right for your family. Remember that every child has their own funded hours. You’re not splitting one allowance between them, which can make a big difference to affordability.

If you feel unsure, you’re not alone. Many parents find the system confusing at first.
