Our people

In my role as a clinical negligence lawyer at Slater and Gordon, as well as the mum of twins, I am a huge supporter of the Twins Trust's commitment to improving maternity standards and support. All too often, I see the consequences of when things go wrong in maternity care and I lead a team who are by the sides of families in these circumstances.

We can also support parents of multiple children in a host of other ways, from knowing their rights around their employment to making plans for their family's future through making a will. Slater and Gordon is absolutely committed to supporting families in every way we can.

I often describe our lives with twin boys as 'joyful chaos'. They were born when our oldest was only two and are an absolute blessing - but being the parent of multiple babies is a unique and often challenging thing to experience.

When we first discovered we were expecting identical twins, as well as wondering how we were going to cope with adding not one but two new babies to our family, I also experienced a lot of fear and anxiety. Identical twins share a placenta and I was aware of the risks around twin to twin transfusion syndrome, and their health and safe delivery was a concern throughout my pregnancy.

My pregnancy was monitored throughout by fortnightly scans and fortunately everything was fine but the delivery itself was traumatic. I became very poorly with pre-eclampsia and I was rushed onto the high dependency unit immediately after the delivery, where I spent the next few days. Oscar struggled to breathe initially and developed an infection so he spent some time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), meaning we were separated for the first few days. Both boys were then very jaundiced and required treatment.

Thanks to the support we had been given by the Twins Trust, that really difficult time was made just that bit easier. I had attended a special antenatal class organised by Twins Trust aimed at parents expecting multiple births, where I had been able to meet other mums who were expecting twins. We were given information around the risks of the birth and delivering prematurely, which is common for twins. Really importantly, we were supported by Twins Trust to visit the hospital and to have a tour of the NICU before delivering - this helped greatly when it became my reality, because I had been in that environment already and knew more about what to expect.

Thankfully, we all recovered and we were soon able to get home together, but the practical resources from Twins Trust have been so important for our family from the very beginning. We still receive their newsletter all these years on.

Twins Trust is a great support with so many aspects of life, from giving advice on breastfeeding twins, through to offering discounts which can really benefit parents whose resources are unexpectedly stretched by the arrival of more than one child.

I'm a principal lawyer (partner) and team leader in Slater and Gordon's medical negligence department.

I specialise in cases involving all aspects of medical negligence, including birth injuries for mother and baby (Cerebral Palsy, Group B Strep, Erbs' Palsy, vaginal tears), spinal injury, surgical injury, orthopaedic injury, missed or delayed diagnosis, failure to treat and fatal accident cases including inquests. I represent injured patients and their families and have focused solely on this practice area since 2008.

I'm regularly asked to comment as a medical negligence expert for the media on high profile cases I'm working on.

At home, I'm mum to a daughter (5yrs) and identical twin boys (18mths).

Our solicitor Laura Preston was fantastic and extremely professional. She made a heart-breaking and traumatic case much easier as she approached it using honesty and empathy as well as hard work and dedication. She was very thorough and always responded to our questions in details and in a timely manner. I was able to talk with her very openly as I would a friend and this helped me tremendously. She is a top quality person to be working for you and I highly recommend.
