Why change is needed
Raising twins or triplets in the UK is often harder than in many comparable economies because there's so little tailored support. Families with multiples can face at least a £20,000 financial impact in the first year after birth, compared with having two babies one after the other.
Our State of the Nation research explores the experiences of multiple birth parents and families in depth. It highlights the financial, practical and emotional pressures on our community and makes a strong case for better support. This evidence shapes the priorities we campaign on and helps us speak directly to decision-makers on your behalf.
What needs to change
Through our own lived experience and daily conversations with families, we see how often systems and services aren't designed with multiples in mind. As the only UK charity dedicated to twins, triplets or more, we're committed to challenging this and securing improvements that reflect real family life.
We're focusing on six major issues:
-
Fairer maternity pay for twins
Maternity pay stays the same whether parents have one baby or more. A fairer system needs to recognise the extra costs and care involved in welcoming twins.
-
Reforming childcare
High quality early education and childcare gives children foundations for lifelong success. We want childcare policy and provision to reflect the realities of caring for twins.
-
Reducing neonatal deaths and stillbirths
Evidence shows our community has worse outcomes during pregnancy and birth. Safer care, better monitoring and consistent pathways means more babies survive and families feel better supported.
-
Creating a more accessible world
Too often, families tell us they feel unwelcome or excluded in their local community. Simple things like suitable shopping trollies can make a big difference.
-
Ensuring suitable housing for triplet families
Safe, suitable housing is essential, especially when caring for triplets or more. Triplet families need ground floor social housing allocations, to improve safety and accessibility.
-
Preventing unwanted separation in school
Splitting twins at school can have a real impact on their wellbeing and learning. Policies need to respect parents' views and recognise the emotional bonds between twins.
Your experience can help drive change
