As part of the Maternity Engagement Project, Twins Trust works with units to improve care for multiple pregnancies in line with NICE guideline NG137.

The project exists because evidence suggests that following NICE guidance for multiple pregnancies saves lives and supports safe, high-quality care for all.

Our Recognition Scheme highlights maternity units taking part in the Maternity Engagement Project. Units are shown as one of three categories:

  • 'Recognised' means the unit has completed the project and shown clear improvements in the care they provide for families
  • 'Participating' means the unit is currently taking part, with the aim of improving adherence to NICE guidance
  • 'Participated' means the unit has completed the Project and made some improvements but is continuing work towards stronger adherence to NICE guidance

The Maternity Engagement Project makes you have a really good look at the care you're giving families and it helps you to take a step back. If I had looked at NICE guidelines prior to the audit, I would have thought "oh yes, we meet all that", but when you actually look at it, there are things we can improve.

Unit 22

Units across the UK have been recognised for strengthening care in different ways. This includes having a dedicated multidisciplinary team, using the right care plans for all types of multiple pregnancy and setting up a dedicated twins clinic, as recommended in the Ockenden Report.

We'd like to congratulate the units that have achieved 'recognised' status. We're also grateful to our team of specialist midwives who work alongside us to help units improve the care they provide.
